Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital

Framework for the Re-Use of Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital

Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital

In 2007 the Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, also known as the “Berger Commission,” directed the closure of the Gates Circle facility and a new infrastructure for cardiovascular services constructed. In August, Kaleida Health and the University at Buffalo broke ground on the Global Heart Vascular Institute which will adjoin Buffalo General Hospital and open in late 2011.

“Now that construction has begun on the new facility, we want to begin the community-based dialogue on this very important parcel of land in the City of Buffalo,” said James. R. Kaskie, President and CEO of Kaleida Health.  “It is important to hear perspectives from the surrounding neighbors and across the community on proper re-uses of the facility and site.”  Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital will remain open and fully functional through 2011.

The Kaleida Health Board of Directors will form a committee of possibly nine to eleven members, identify a chair of the committee and a third party re-use specialist, to help guide the process. The committee will hold public meetings throughout 2010 and report findings of the process.

Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital was originally the Buffalo Homeopathic Hospital, located at Washington and North Division Streets. In 1911, it opened at its current location at 3 Gates and Delaware Avenue.  In 1923, its name changed to honor President Millard Fillmore.

The hospital is home to the Kaleida Health Stroke Center, the Cardiac Care Center, the Hand Center of Western New York, the Diabetes & Endocrinology Center of Western New York and the only hyperbaric chamber in Western New York.
