The Junior Board of the Buffalo General Hospital focuses on service, volunteerism and fundraising for the benefit of the hospital. Since its establishment in 1935, the Junior Board has raised over $4.5 million to purchase equipment and support projects for the benefit of the the nursing and medical staff, as well as patients and their families.
Funds are raised through the operation of a lovely gift shop adjacent to the hospital's main lobby and hosting creative special events, including jewelry sales and a scrub sale for hospital staff. In 2007, the Junior Board funded over $65,000 in projects for the Emergency Department, Neurology, Transplant, and Nursing Services, plus $3,000 in nursing scholarships.
The Cardiac Liaison program, created by the Junior Board over 15 years ago, places volunteer Board members within the Cardiac Surgery Waiting Room to provide a compassionate, caring environment for the families of patients' undergoing cardiac surgery. Junior Board members assist the families of patients by providing information on what to expect throughout their procedure, from check-in and throughout the operation, to check-out and keeping expectations realistic once at home.
